Description

The better you see, the less you understand.

Eigenstate is an exploration game played through a research telescope. Alone above the desert, search the night sky and catalogue what's out there: stars, galaxies, nebulae, and something that wants to be seen.

Cerro Seco National Observatory sits on a mountaintop above the empty desert of southern Arizona. You arrived for a one-week observing run, expecting to meet your research advisor and a team of technicians. But everyone is gone; the observatory is empty, powered down, and in disrepair.

Search the Sky

Slew the telescope across a vast night sky, lock on to objects, then hold it steady while the data comes in. Power and data storage space are limited each night - choose carefully what you'll scan.

Catalogue What You Find

Raw data isn't enough - you'll need to analyze what you collect. Extract peaks, trace signals, and fit curves to turn distant points of light into entries in your catalogue.

Restore the Observatory

To finish your research, you'll need to bring the observatory back online. Explore the mountaintop to power up systems and activate better instruments. See into new spectra, resolve fainter and more distant objects, and observe parts of the sky you couldn't reach before.

Look Deeper

As you see further and further, you can explain less and less. The telescope moves on its own. Strange data fills the servers. Interference creeps between systems. The better your instruments get, the more clearly it can be seen...

Team

Chris
Developer
Chris spends his days as a data engineer, building systems that ingest and analyze enormous volumes of data, and his nights building a game about a person alone on a mountain doing the same. The idea traces back to a school visit to Kitt Peak Observatory in southern Arizona. Eigenstate is his first release, made solo in Godot 4 under the name Shady Trail. He lives near Seattle with his wife, two kids, and two dogs.
